Company History

Jenni Wren (above right) formed Slanjayvah Danza in 2004 and as Artistic Director and Choreographer, made her first full programme, "Y etto que lo que e"? (And this, what is this?) with tremendous support and key contributions from Susana Aguilar and Luisa Galan (pictured above, left and centre). The work participated in the "Certamen de Madrid", where it won a venue contract and was shown in 2 Spanish regions in 04/05.

Since returning to the UK, the company has been successful in a number of funding bids from Arts Council England and The National Lottery to create and tour various productions covering a multitude of themes.

The company has attracted a mixed range of audience types and continues to attract both experienced and non-traditional theatre-goers by making high quality, accessible, humorous and enthusiastic choreographies and film.

In 2007, Wren worked with and observed choreographic processes and explorations by Yael Flexer, Janet Smith, Javier de Frutos, Henrique Rodhovalo, Lucy Suggate, Ben Wright, Liv Lorent and Mark Bruce before being granted a further award from ACE to create and tour "Hybrid" in early 2008.

Since then, the company has developed and defined its practices and creative ventures with new creative works and research into the integration of choreography and digital media, for both film and live stage productions.

In 2009 after a number of R&D periods, including the making of the film and a trip to Argentina, "Blind passion - Live Cut", the first of three new works was performed across Yorkshire recieving accolades beyond all expectations.

Inspired, Wren is currently preparing the two other new works, "Crazy Joanna" and "Minor Tears". These choreographies, once marinaded with the appropriate delicacies will, alongside "Blind Passion - Live Cut" be performed both individually and as a triple bill under the title of Mode: Sensation/Thought which will take Slanjayvah Danza into 2010 and beyond.

Slanjayvah Danza is currently Company in Residence and works in Partnership with Seven Artspace, Leeds.
