1      The launch of a NEW work "Crazy Joanna"

We celebrated the arrival of "Crazy Joanna" at a special company event on the 1st of May

at SEVEN Arts Centre, our home venue.

With a range of VIP members, the launch of the latest and possibly the most socially conscientious work you will see this year was extremely well received, not to mention sold out.

"Crazy Joanna"

In response to her Blind Passion (which deals with the purer side of passion) Jenni Wren concentrated her research on the dark side of passion in the creation of Crazy Joanna. Initially inspired by the story of 'Juana la Loca' the last Queen of Castile (Spain) and fused again with her love of Tango, Wren delivers a powerful take on domestic abuse in a hard hitting, tangible dance and film integrated story, not to be missed. Full of emotional content, dancer Dani Ferreira plays the role of Joanna in a dramatic tale depicting the journey she undertakes to break the repetitive chain of falling into abusive relationships.  "Crazy Joanna" was made in celebration of survivors of domestic abuse.

We would like to publicly thank all those who have contributed to the project through the input of their own personal stories.  Treated with utmost respect and confidentiality by each artist involved, we hope though our collaboration and artistic integrity, that we have given
these personal accounts some form of justice, out of
respect for what these survivors have experienced.

Leeds dancer Dani Ferreira dances the three roles of ‘Crazy Joanna':  as ‘Juana La Loca' with Riccardo Meneghini as Philip of Flanders, Amir Giles as her Argentinean Tango partner and on film with Phil Sanger as a couple in today's world.

THE SCORE (is the final product of a series of research and development periods undertaken by Phil Sanger and Jenni Wren to explore various themes and ideas.

Inspired by Behavioural Patterns and the Human Psyche, Sanger and Wren have produced an evening of raw, evocative and socially charged dance that will strike a chord with all, featuring existing works Blind Passion and The Ghostship along side two new pieces Crazy Joanna and Professional Widow.

This programme is not to be missed!  THE SCORE made it's preview at the Barnsley Civic and on the 8th May which was very well supported.

The Next Performances is at The Riley, NSCD on 12 June. Hope to see you there!  Booking details are on our current events page

6   PRESS and Interviews

With Ali Schofield, Leeds Guide

Jenni Wren enjoyed a wee dram and an interview with Ali Schofield, Features Editor of The Leeds Guide.   She also writes and edits for Plush Magazine. Want a sneak preview of the article.   The May edition of The Leeds Guide is also now available.

With the Yorkshire Post!

It was lovely to meet Chris Bond, Features Editor from the Yorkshire Post.  Chris came to interview Jenni Wren and have a sneak preview of "Crazy Joanna" before writing a very comprehensive article.  Thanks Chris, we look forward to seeing you at one of the shows!  Read the interview here

7    Filming at Skipton Castle and Bolton Castle in support of "Crazy Joanna"

Many thanks go out to Sebastian Fattorini and all the staff at Skipton Castle who allowed the SD crew to film for one of the most important scenes in the work, reflecting the most stressful moment for "Juana" (last queen of Castile).  It was a special opportunity that allowed us to not only gain a film set that was of the time (1500's) but to also learn how the lady of Skipton Castle was also a survivor of domestic abuse.  Skipton Castle is an impressive history-rich castle that yields an abundance of Yorkshire history and we would definitely recommend a visit.

Visit the website.

Crew at Skipton Castle

Similarly, "Crazy Joanna" was supported by Bolton Castle, a spectacular mediaeval fortress, preserved in outstanding condition in North Yorkshire where we filmed using the castle's period furniture, capturing the intensity of the time period.  Set in the Yorkshire Dales the views from the top turrets are absolutely outstanding and again well worth a visit.  Thanks to Tom Orde-Powlett and such friendly staff, (especially Katie) who looked after us during the filming day.  Visit the website.

8    Working with DaiNa

We were extremely honoured to be introduced to and work with The DaiNa Team (Domestic Abuse Is NEVER Acceptable) who helped us considerably in the research process of "Crazy Joanna".  Managed by Doreen Murdin and Nicci Vella, the ladies attended the premier and wrote us a review from their angle, having worked within this field for many years.

"We attended the premier of this stunning production. If you are able to make the trip to Leeds, you will have an amazing evening. Dance and film together made an incredible vehicle to carry the message of control, pain and survival to the audience. Thought provoking and inspired!". Read the review here.

Doreen Murden is also a fabulous poet and DaiNA project understand that "There are a variety of ways to reach people, through art, theatre radio, television, and dance as well as the written and spoken word."  Please take a moment to visit the website http://www.dainaproject.co.uk/ and read some of the information and poetry that it shares. Doreen also wrote us a poem for Crazy Joanna.

Many thanks Doreen and Nicci... your advice and information was invaluable to the creation of "Crazy Joanna".

"If you are a professional in a position of supporting groups or individual women who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic Abuse, DaiNa could provide you with a valuable resource." www.dainaproject.co.uk

9   Spain comes out to Play!  Maiko Danza from Granada joins us in Leeds.

As part of our European cultural exchange we are pleased to be re-united in performance with our friends and colleagues Maiko Danza, who join us for part of our 2010 tour.

Based in Granada, Maiko Danza consists of Susana Aguilar (Ex NSCD student and previous Slanjayvah Danza member), Carina Martin and Mar Andres, three phenomenal dancers/dance makers and teachers at the Conservatoire de Danza of Spain.

A beautiful piece of work, Maiko Danza's "Silent Bird" compliments the programme with is delicate choreography, jazz vocals and innovative use of moving structures.

Read more about "Silent Bird" on our current events page.  Or if you speak Spanish, see their latest interview

10   Further Dates with Cloud Dance Festival - July 2010

1.       Arts Council England support "Crazy Joanna"Arts Council England Grants for All

We are thrilled to announce and extend our thanks to Arts Council England (Yorkshire) who have generously dedicated financial support for the "Crazy Joanna" project.
The lottery award, through the Grants for the arts programme is supporting artistic director Jenni Wren's new collaborative, Contemporary Dance choreographic work "Crazy Joanna" which explores the dark side of passion through dance and the moving image.  This has allowed us to move forward with the project and confirm our regional Yorkshire tour dates!

 2.       "Crazy Joanna" is in our studio! And so are all the collaborative artists!

"Crazy Joanna" takes you on a journey through history, based on the tormented life of medieval Spanish Queen ‘Juana la Loca', through the backstreets of Buenos Aires at the birth of the Tango - to a neighbourhood near you.

We are elated to have such a diverse and cultural mix of dancers and collaborating artists for our "Crazy Joanna" project with nationalities ranging from South African/Portuguese, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland, England and Wales.  Mix that with the Spanish and Hispanic influences within this work and you can imagine the flavours the new work will bring to the film and stage work.

Leeds dancer Dani Ferreira dances the three roles of ‘Crazy Joanna':  as ‘Juana La Loca' with Riccardo Meneghini as Philip of Flounders, Amir Giles as her Argentinean Tango partner and on film with Phil Sanger as a couple in today's world.  See collaborators on the menu bar in the "company" section for more information.

A Thirsty Dani!

Jenni Wren is working with some very skilled collaborators such as film maker and editor Aurora Fernley and Nic Sandiland who has expertise in the integration of dance and the moving image.  Slanjayvah Danza is also honoured to be using award winning artist David Cobley's image "Into the Light"   to support and promote the work.

"Crazy Joanna" will be performed at 5 regional venues with the premier on 1 May
at Seven, Leeds where Slanjayvah is the resident dance company.
Tour information will soon be available on our current events page.

3.       Performance Success in Leeds and London (more great reviews!)

SEVEN Springboard - January 2010SEVEN Arts Centre

It was a pleasure returning to our home venue of SEVEN Arts Centre, where we sneak previewed some of our research and work in progress of "Crazy Joanna" danced by soloist Dani Ferreira.  In running with the current theme of Passion, we went on to entrance the audience with a full on rendition of Blind Passion, danced by Jenni Wren and Phil Sanger.

We really appreciate the audience feedback from the work and would like to thank Maya from El Bareto,
who is partially sighted, for her comment that touched our souls, "I couldn't see much of what was going on,
but I felt something incredible during the Blind Passion performance... it was beautiful to experience such an
amazing power.  I don't think you realise how special and strong this work is for me to be able to "see" that."

We apologise to those who could not get tickets for the sell out event and hope you will be able to make it to our next one!  Well done to the up and coming leeds based dancers and companies who we supported through the event including, "GraceBonet" (graduate company) and "Poor Man's Theatre" (student company, Leeds University)

"Blind Passion - Live Cut" at RESOLUTION! 2010

We had a great time with RESOLUTION! 2010 staff at our London performance hosted by the Robin Howard Theatre of The Place.  Thanks to all the dance writers and reviewers for their comments, communication and reviews.

"Powerful and seductive Slanjayvah Danza's Blind Passion is quite literally that; a fiery display of intricate Tango and Contemporary acrobatics, danced blindfolded by skilled performers and choreographers, Jenni Wren and Phil Sanger. Wearing only flesh coloured thongs, the sightless couple guide each other with trust and grace into seamless lifts and balances...The strength and control of the pair is outstanding, the movement of their handsome limbs enough to make the most accomplished contemporary dancer envious."  - Jennifer Teale

"Slanjayvah's Blind Passion, a sensual tease of a dance that delivered exactly what it said on the tin,  had the performers blindfold themselves part way through to explore a tango-style intimacy, owing all to touch and trust... Jenni Wren and Phil Sanger danced the work with an expert, unsighted feel for each other's movement."

Our Valentines event was bursting with romance, excitement, great food and passionate atmosphere!  We entertained couples, singles and groups with an array of eclectic dance performances all wrapped scrumptiously together in an original and new story of passion told by storyteller Joe Collins, accompanied by Spanish Guitarist Andrew Brown.  Thank you to all those who came to the night, for all those who got up onto the dance floor to celebrate, for those who left feedback, to the chef and staff of SEVEN.  We definitely had a great community feeling at this event and yes, we will be doing another similar evening in the future.  Your feedback will go onto our feedback page in the near future.

David Cobley presents Jenni Wren with ...

Award winning painter David Cobley attended our Valentines Event on the 14th of February.

This was an honour for the company who will be working with him in the future to create paintings based on Artistic Director Jenni Wren's choreographic work.  During the evening he surprised Jenni by publically presenting her with the first Artists print of "Into the Light" (leaving her speechless and not many can do that, lets be honest :-)).

David Cobley and Jen Wren

Thanks to David for such a generous gift, the company now proudly hangs this in its office, illuminating and inspiring the space!  (Sorry for the camera flash in the glass of the image) :-(

Celebration of our Golden Friends 50th Anniversary

We would like to congratulate our Golden Friends Paul Ashton and Stanley Ellwood on their  50th Anniversary together!

The company dancers celebrated the evening with them in Gawber Church Hall and as our special present, danced an array of small performances before going big out with Blind Passion - Live Cut to end the evening for them and their guests.  It was a beautiful event and an extremely enjoyable evening for us.

14 February  2010- SEVEN Arts Centre
"TAKE ME THERE"  - Valentines Event

This truely is the way to impress your valentine date.

Walking into the spacious but seductively lit room, you will feel as though you are walking onto the film set of a romantic festival in a traditional neighbourhood village somewhere in Spain, or Argentina perhaps. All is in readiness. The air is full of anticipation. Latin influences are evident in the pungent perfumes that linger, mixed with aromas of tapas, freshly baked bread, garlic and wine.  Taking your seat you accustom yourself to your surroundings aware now of the rhythmic beat of the tango canyengue that wraps itself around you like a warm blanket. Your eyes feast on the mouth-watering delights laid out on the table before you. The carafe of blood red wine beckons to be poured. You are indeed a participant in this film scene but the wine, the guests the tapas and the ambience - are all real.  Conversation has warmed to a gentle humming, the air is full of expectation, incisive, exciting, provocative. The room stills. The conversation gently fades away, you can feel the excitement.  Rousing notes played by the guitarist introduce the first dancer with a rustling of petticoats, flashing dark eyes and a seductive smile. It begins. The indulgence. An evening of exotic dancing, Flamenco, Tango, a beautiful voice singing, unforgettable music and very good company. A Valentine's night with Slanjayvah Danza, a night to remember.

2  More reviews on our reviews page!  "Blind Passion" Live Cut

Slanjayvah Danza performed 'Blind Passion' (the first of three 'passions' that make up the triple
bill Mode: Sensation/Thought by Artistic Director Jenni Wren) at the Cloud Dance Festival in
London, December 2009 where they received the highest audience vote for "highlight of the evening"!

The now well-publicised photo by Emma Dalzell of Jenni Wren and Phil Sanger
(http://www.clouddance-festival.org.uk/index.php/Parade/slanjayvah-danza.html) was featured in Time Out London promoting the Cloud Dance Festival, listed as 'critic's choice' and continued to feature in all reviews of the festival so far.

Feedback and reviews on ‘Blind Passion' have been 'amazing'.

First review out was from Londonist - ‘that photo' literally filling the page. Londonist's review said "Slanjayvah Danza's

sensuous tango influenced duet offers a feast of toned flesh intricately synchronized by Jenni Wren and Phil Sanger. Their partnering with blindfolds is inventive, the potential hazards of such complex partner work laid - almost literally - bare. Link to article http://bit.ly/4wTVJ9

Quote from Bruce Marriot of Ballet.co.uk  "...a huge hit. ...an impressively fresh piece and I'm sure will be in the rep for a long time - it certainly deserves to be seen by many more." Link to article http://ow.ly/JR1c

"Blind Passion - Live Cut, performed by Slanjayvah Danza, is an explosive and memorable work....The movement is well-crafted, fluid and impressively executed.... the strong sense of touch that it created and striking passionate energy of the work was compelling and intriguing."  Hetty Blades.

Laura Cappelle wrote ‘We start with the delightful Jenni Wren, Artistic Director of Slanjayvah Danza, whose Blind Passion - Live Cut with Phil Sanger left the audience stunned.' Link to article http://www.bellafigura.fr/?p=427

Many thanks to 'award winning portrait and figure painter'  David Cobley, who came to see the show and who gave his time to  AD Jenni Wren who enjoyed spending the evening discussing life, art and dance!   David will be joining the company in the New Year, spending a number of days at the SD base of SEVEN, collaborating with, drawing and painting the company dancers at work.  His painting (below) will be the main image to front "Crazy Joanna".

Artistic Director Jenni Wren, to use one of his paintings in her new work!

We are honoured that artist David Cobley has taken an interest in the new work and is
allowing us to use "Into the Light" for the new work "Crazy Joanna".

"Into the Light" - David Cobley
"Into the light" - David Cobley

DAVID Cobley is an award winning portrait and figure painter who works from a studio in Bath.  His portrait commissions include HRH The Princess Royal, Dame Alicia Markova and President Assad of Syria. His portrait of Ken Dodd OBE was bought by the National Portrait Gallery for its permanent Collection, and he is currently working on a commission for the Gallery that is due to be unveiled in the New Year.  www.davidcobley.co.uk

Slanjayvah Danza will be releasing the first promotional material using Cobley's work in early 2010.  Said Wren, "Descriptions of his work say his paintings use colour and light as meditations on solitude, longing and intimacy - which fit in exactly with the mood and ethos of ‘Crazy Jo'."

For further info, see press release.

•3.
New Work - "Crazy Joanna"

We would like to introduce you to the new work "Crazy Joanna", due to premier in May 2010.

Marinaded with the appropriate delicacies alongside "Blind Passion" is "Crazy Joanna" a dance and film integration piece. From the tormented life of medieval Spanish Queen ‘Juana la Loca', through the  backstreets of Buenos Aires at the birth of the Tango - to a neighbourhood near you. A socially conscientious, amazingly executed piece recounting the anguished escape of a woman trapped in abusive relationships.

•4.       We extend a warm welcome to.....

We are delighted to announce the return of Dancer, Dani Ferreira who is currently working on a variety of small projects with Jenni Wren in the run up to dancing the lead role in "Crazy Joanna", 2010.

We have a new addition to the group and extend a warm welcome to Dancer, Nick Keegan who will join us in the new year, taking over the male role for "Blind Passion" - Live Cut.

It is a pleasure to be working with Carol Lee as our new Press Officer.  She is doing a terrific job at keeping everyone informed of all the latest news.

We have not entirely said farewell to Phil Sanger (who has recently joined Phoenix Dance Theatre).  Phil will continue to perform "Blind Passion" till the end of 2009 and maintain an active interest in the company.

NEWS - SEPT 09

SUMMER CO-LAB INSPIRATION

Jenni Wren led the Summer Co-Lab in August at SEVEN Arts Centre with Dancers from Leeds, some of them who have just started with NSCD's VERVE company (good luck all).  This was a great 4 days of classes, workshops and research into the latest ideas of her future work, "Crazy Jo".  Edited footage will be available on  our video-snippets page in the next couple of weeks, courtesy of Little Northern Light.  Keep a look out!

We were privileged during Co-Lab to have the opportunity to work with Ali Mac (percussionist) who accompanied daily class, creating a variety of dynamic rhythms and positive energy in the studio.

Many thanks to everyone who participated and contributed to the project in its initial stages and to SEVEN for their on-going support.

"BLIND PASSION" was well received after its summer tour overwhelmed its audiences.  The premier was performed to an audience of over 170 people at the SEVEN's 2nd year anniversary,

receiving great feedback and positive support for the rest of the tour.
The work will be shown again in the late autumn and spring 2010 with dates to be revealed in the near future.

Lastest REVIEWS!

"Jaw-droppingly stunning and achingly sensual" - Creative Bradford

"A brief yet vibrant contemporary dance piece beginning with the Argentine Tango the couple moved towards one another and jointly took on a challenging set of dance sequences, lifts and near acrobatic movements.  This dance work scrumptiously uncovered just enough piece by piece, tantalizing the audience and driving the routine forward.  The momentum and intensity of the movement progressively built into climax after climax.  The dancers were highly professional, and choreography of this intensity and quality was a joy to watch." What happened to 2008? (it zipped by!)

Firstly...

We would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Arts Council England and The National Lottery fund (Awards for All) who supported us financially in creative and organisational development. These funds allowed us to keep moving forward and growing as a company both artistically and in quality management.

We successfully created and toured "Hybrid" and would like extend our gratitude to everyone who engaged in the research, each of the venues, performers, collaborators and technicians, those who participated in the workshops and not forgetting those who came to see the work.

With no rest for the creative, Slanjayvah Danza kept going through the summer months having been commissioned to perform in the Big Dance biennial national event. The day was wonderful regardless of the terrible British weather and we had a great crowd of people watching.

Without stopping, the company was commissioned to perform and show recent film work at "Spaceball" events in both Dundee and Furness, in Scotland. This has taken our work into a new collaborative partnership as Spaceball expands with its members, facilities and hosting of excellent music and VJ talent.

SpaceBall

Finally, we are developing our facebook page and hope you will join us as a friend!  Meanwhile, have a happy start to 2009!

That's all for now but be sure to keep up to date with future Slanjayvah Danza postings and opportunities.
